The Village of Stone Park for the first time ever in their history on October 18, 2006 was the recipient of the 2006 Governor's Home Town Awards for the community with a population of 5,001 - 10,000. The Village of Stone Park created the Stone Park Public Safety Department in an effort to strengthen the Village's ability to respond to public safety concerns. This diverse group of volunteers offers their time and expertise to help the community. The Public Safety Officers receive training in a variety of areas that are useful to the police, fire and public works departments and they serve augment existing public safety agencies.

The Department currently has 26 volunteers that have donated approximately 5,000 hours over the past year. The program is designed to be responsive to community needs and will continue to recruit additional volunteers to expand the program. The Stone Park Public Safety Department is run by Chief Giuseppe (Joe) Capece, Deputy Chief Louis V. Fatta and Fire Department Chief John Cummins, with the assistance of Public Safety Officer Lt. Charles Ciancanelli and his staff.
